  16. <p>After 13 seasons, Larry Bird takes himself out of the game
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     It wasn't exhaustion from grappling with opposing forwards
  19. that finally caused Larry Bird, 35, to retire from basketball.
  20. Rather, it was the strain of stuffing all 6 ft. 9 in. of himself
  21. into airline seats and team buses every night. Citing chronic
  22. back pain, the National Basketball Association's 11th-leading
  23. all-time scorer and three-time Most Valuable Player has called
  24. it quits. "I'm excited to be going to a new life," said Bird,
  25. who will move to the Boston Celtics' front office. "But I'm
  26. going to miss this life." Celtics' fans were in mourning; during
  27. the reign of Bird, they had been treated to three world
  28. championships.

  30. <p>     Bird's electrifying performances on the courts of the
  31. N.B.A. were always built on the unexpected. He seemed
  32. stone-footed and awkward of movement, yet he invariably
  33. surprised both fans and opponents with his effectiveness. His
  34. fleshy face, spiky hair and bargain-basement mustache looked
  35. decidedly unathletic. Yet he was one of the game's greatest
  36. playmakers and shot nearly 50% from the field.

  38. <p>     He leaves behind splendid memories. In 1984 he led the
  39. Celtics to an N.B.A. championship that included two tense
  40. overtime victories over the Lakers and his friend Magic Johnson.
  41. In the 1987 eastern conference finals, with one second left and
  42. the Celtics down 107-106, Bird intercepted a Detroit ball and
  43. passed off for the winning basket. Said he: "I could take my
  44. game to the next level just on the roar of the crowd." In the
  45. constellation of athletes who helped propel the N.B.A. to record
  46. popularity and profitability in the past decade, Bird will be
  47. linked with his Dream Team comrades Magic and Michael Jordan as
  48. the brightest stars of what may soon be remembered as the
  49. N.B.A.'s golden age.
